I've always wondered about the surreal aspect of having a celebration of all things Elvis in the middle of the sleepy Australian town called Parkes.

Parkes' radio telescope observatory was used to receive live, televised images of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, an accomplishment that still gets the local population talking. Yet the city remains quaint except for when it hosts the Elvis Festival annually.

The Elvis Parkes is held in the second week of January to coincide with the birthday of The King.
